One major advantage of the SWU TEFL program is the way in which we combine an opportunity to experience real Thai schools with a field trip to one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. During the second half of the program, we will take a minivan out of Bangkok and travel to the beautiful beachfront town of Prachuap, approximately 350 kilometers away. Prachuap is well-known as the location of the famous Wat Tang Sai temple complex, located on Thongchai Mountain.
This will give our trainees an opportunity to see one of the most relaxing and beautiful parts of the country, while gaining practical hands-on experience in schools similar to the ones our graduates will be teaching in. We will also design and run an English camp for the children of Prachuap, allowing our new teachers to practice using activities that students will enjoy, and to have fun at the same time!
In Prachuap, we will stay at the lovely Ban Grood Resort, where you will be permitted to choose your own roommate for the week. Alternatively, for an additional $200, you can have a private room. The resort itself has many amenities and comforts, including air-conditioning, a large swimming pool, beachfront access, free wifi, free breakfast, hot showers, cable TV, and in room refrigerators. There will be plenty of time to relax in the evening and talk about the day’s activities. On your final day in Prachuap, you will be given the day off to rent a motorbike, explore, and get to see this beautiful town for yourself.
During our stay in Prachuap, we will spend most of our time during the day visiting both private and government schools. On our first full day in Prachuap,ur participants will get to see actual Anuban (kindergarten), Prathom (primary), and Matayom (secondary) classes taught by foreign teachers. The second day, the trainee will spend an entire day following a foreign English teacher and watching them teach, while asking questions about their job and working conditions. The third day, the trainees will take turns substituting for the teacher they observed, with that teacher present in class to help with discipline and give effective and practical feedback.
In addition, we will plan and create an English camp for the children of Prachuap. The object of this camp is to give our trainees real experience creating and guiding fun activities designed to join education with entertainment, and provide a pleasant and memorable experience for themselves and their students. The trainer will offer advice and act as MC and observer for the camp, but all activities will be designed, prepared, and enacted by the trainees themselves.
Finally, after a day of rest and relaxation in Prachuap, we will return to Bangkok for the final phase of the course.
